Finding the right support in Waikato
The Waikato region, centred on Hamilton and extending across a large area of the central North Island, has a growing aged care sector. Hamilton has the most concentrated range of services in the region. The Coromandel Peninsula and communities around Taupo have also seen retirement-oriented services develop, reflecting the significant number of retirees who choose these areas.
Outside Hamilton, options vary considerably by location. The Coromandel and Thames Valley have some services reflecting their older demographic, while rural parts of the region have fewer options. The Waikato region includes significant Maori communities and some providers offer culturally appropriate care — ask specifically when researching. Families for whom te reo Maori and tikanga are important should ask providers about this directly.
