Finding the right support in Northland
Northland is a large, predominantly rural region with a diverse population, significant Maori communities, and a growing older demographic. Whangarei, as the regional centre, has the main concentration of aged care services. The Bay of Islands area — particularly Kerikeri — has some retirement-oriented services reflecting its popularity with retirees.
Outside Whangarei and Kerikeri, services are more dispersed and families in rural Northland and the Far North face real access challenges. Northland has significant Maori and Pacific communities and culturally appropriate care is an important consideration. Ask specifically about cultural competence when researching any provider in this region. Families planning for parents in remote parts of Northland should think carefully about access to services as needs increase.
